- Anand Dighe was a famous Indian Politician. He was a prominent leader of the Shivsena party. Dighe stepped into politics at the prime age of 18.
- Anand Dighe would use a steel pot for drinking water.
- Dighe joined the Shivsena in the 70s as a party worker to boost Hindutva and Marathi reputations. Post this, Bala Saheb Thackeray appointed him the head of Thane Zila. After taking over the responsibilities of Thane Zila, Anand Dighe would organize a Darbar to hear people’s problems and find a solution. Here he would help people find resolutions to their issues. It was because of this that he was considered as the Messiah of the poor and weak people.

Being a part of Shivsena, Dighe was accused of murdering Shivsena member Shridhar Khopkar. Post this, Dighe made a distance from the Shivsena party, and he expressed his anger at the same by voting for Congress in 1989. At that time, Dighe said that traitors should not be forgiven. After this, Sreedhar Khopkar was murdered.
Anand Dighe was also arrested under TADA once. After Dighe was released from jail on bail after the Shridhar Khopkar murder Shivsainiks said whatever he did was under the fight for Shivsena’s rights. That is why his followers started calling him Dharmvir, and that is how others also started addressing him. Some Shivsainiks objected to his method of working. But Dighe said that whatever he has done was done with Balasaheb Thackeray’s permission.
Once coming back from a Ganpati Mahotsav, ( Anand Dighe car accident )Anand Dighe’s car met with an accident near the Vandana bus depot. In this, he was severely injured and taken to Singhania Hospital nearby. During the treatment, he had a severe heart attack, and Anand Dighe passed away on 26 August 2001. He was barely 49/50 years at that time. After hearing news of his passing away, his followers circled the hospital and started vandalizing things. Not only that, they burned the hospital as well.
After his death, Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders of Shivsena had to be transported from Thane to stop the riots as the Shivsena workers had got very aggressive. “Even after two decades of his death, Dighe is a Charismatic personality in Thane city, where a faction of Shiv Sena workers considers him as a God.”
After Anand Dighe’s death, Eknath Shinde was made the political successor for the Thane region. Just like his Guru Anand Dighe, he started his political career in the same manner.
Until Anand Dighe was alive, there was no other “Saheb” in the Thane district. Aside from Balasaheb Thackeray and Anand Dighe, nobody else in Shivsena had “Saheb” used against their name.
A hospital in Maharashtra’s Kalwa town has been named “Dharamveer Anand Dighe Heart care center after him.
Anand Dighe was a prominent and impressive leader, and even the police would not interfere in his life. Not only that, whichever Police Commissioner would come to the town would come to Anand Dighe for a “Courtesy visit.”
Marathi Film named “Dharmvir,” released on 13th May 2022, was based on Anand Dighe’s life. In this film, the personal bonding between Anand Dighe and Balasaheb Thackeray has been highlighted. While talking to NBT online, Ashok Wankhede stated that Anand Dighe and Balasaheb Thackeray had a love-hate relationship.
There were a lot of disputes regarding the screening of the movie “Dharmvir.” It is said that Uddhav Thackeray left the film during its screening. He cited unknown reasons behind doing so. Uddhav Thackeray was not prepared to see the climax of the movie. He said he did not want to see Dighe dying on the screen. The film was launched by Eknath Shinde. In fact, Shinde had bought the tickets for the movie in bulk and distributed them to his supporters so that through this film, they could understand his political rise. In this movie, Eknath Shinde was shown as the real successor to Anand Dighe.
Anand Dighe brought a revolution in Maharashtra politics. He was the Guru of the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde.
