Indian Criminal and Politician Atique Ahmed assassinated on 15th April 2023 was known for his controversial political and criminal past. Ahmed had served as a member of the Indian Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Samajwadi Party. He had more than 100 criminal cases against him and competed in several elections from jail, where he was held under various charges. The Uttar Pradesh Police had seized properties worth Rs 1168.4 crores belonging to Ahmed and his family. In 2019, he was convicted of kidnapping a witness who testified against him regarding the 2005 murder of elected politician Raju Pal. Ahmed remained in jail until his assassination by gunmen on his way to a court-mandated medical checkup.

Early and Personal Life

Atique Ahmed married Shaista Praveen and had five sons. His brother Khalid Azim was also an ex-MLA from the Samajwadi Party.

2009 General Elections

In the 2009 general elections, Atique Ahmed was allowed to run for election since he was yet to be convicted in any case. However, the Samajwadi Party expelled him in 2008, and Mayawati refused him a ticket under BSP. Later, he contested in elections as a candidate from Apna Dal party from Pratapgarh only to lose the election.

Elections in 2012 and 2014

In the 2012 Uttar Pradesh elections, Ahmed contested under the Apna Dal banner from the Allahabad (West) constituency. He filed his nomination from jail. He appealed for bail in Allahabad High Court, but 10 judges refused to hear the case. The 11th judge finally took up the matter, and he was released on bail before the elections. However, he lost to Raju Pal’s widow, Puja Pal. In 2014, he was taken back into the Samajwadi Party and fought the national elections from Shrawasti, where he managed to secure a quarter of the votes but lost by nearly a lakh (100,000) votes to Daddan Mishra of the BJP.

Criminal Cases

Ahmed has had a controversial and criminal past, with many allegations and convictions to his name. In 2016, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting staff members of Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences. He was arrested on February 11, 2017, and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. In 2019, Ahmed was convicted of the kidnapping of Umesh Pal, a key witness who testified against Ahmed regarding the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal. Ahmed was the main suspect accused in this murder case. Ahmed’s brother Ashraf, son Asad, and associate Guddu Muslim, a bomb maker who allegedly threw the bomb at Umesh Pal and has been involved in previous violent crimes, were the co-accused. Ahmed was shifted from the Prayagraj Central Jail to the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad in June 2019.

Electoral History

Ahmed had a successful career in politics, having been elected as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) five times and as a member of parliament (MP) once. He began his political career in 1989 as an independent candidate and was elected as an MLA from the Allahabad West constituency. He served two more consecutive terms as an MLA from the same constituency, both times as an independent candidate. In 1996, he contested the assembly election from the same constituency but this time as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and won. In 2002, he contested and won the assembly election for the fifth time, but this time as a candidate of the Apna Dal. In 2004, Ahmed was elected as an MP from the Phulpur constituency in the 14th Lok Sabha, representing the Samajwadi Party.

Death

On April 13, 2023, tragedy struck the Ahmed family when Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi. Asad was wanted in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. Two days later, on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police for a court-mandated medical checkup in Prayagraj, Atique Ahmed was asked about his absence during his son’s last rites. In response, he stated that he wasn’t taken, so he didn’t go. Suddenly, a pistol was fired at Ahmed’s head at point-blank range, resulting in his death. Ashraf Ahmed, Atique’s brother who was accompanying him, was also killed in the attack. The shooting was captured on live television, and the attackers were later identified as three individuals who had posed as media personnel. The perpetrators surrendered themselves and were subsequently arrested. The incident sent shockwaves across the country and sparked widespread outrage.
