After Disney had only recently acquired the rights to Star Wars, the media group published an extraordinary storybook app for kids, which is also a definite must-have download for adult Star Wars fans: Star Wars Journeys – The Phantom Menace is not only an epic interactive storybook like the eponymous film, it also offers a comprehensive and adventurous podracer game. We will introduce you to both of these aspects in our review below.
Star Wars Journeys – 180 degree parallax story
The complete Star Wars Episode 1 movie history is told on 20 panoramic pictures, which have been drawn especially for this storybook app for kids and does not consist of movie excerpts. Each picture can be rotated 180 degrees, which is truly an amazing and unique book experience. The scenes can either be moved with the finger or via upper body rotation, if you hold the tablet or smartphone infront of you. You will basically feel like you’re inside the scene.
The text is displayed whilst reading along and during the narration, it can however be hidden completely, something we’re really fond of in this case, also because the narration is really good and kind of takes over the entertaining part of the reading.
The pictures are also not static, but come to life due to the many little animation and not the least because of the so called parallax effect during rotation.
Star Wars Journeys – Podracer racing game
If you have seen the movie Star Wars Episode 1, you’ll know that Anakin Skywalker has a big appearance as a Pod Racer Pilot in this episode. The app therefore offers a further highlight, which is a comprehensive podracer racing game, where kids get to emulate Anakin Skywalker and take on many racing series challenges. The podracer itself can be tuned, as long as the required credits have been collected during the race and in the book.
You can get a good impression of the podracer game yourself in our YouTube video trailer, where we take on a racing challenge.
Star Wars collectibles
Players cannot only earn credits during the podracer game, in order to be able to unlock other pod racers, or to tune them with. There are also credits hidden in the actual interactive story, where more characters and vehicles can be collected to unlock more credits and additional collectibles. Luckily, there are no in-app purchases.
Star Wars Journeys: The Phantom Menace | kids app rating
Yes, we have to admit that we are Star Wars fans – but the new Disney storybook app for kids is simply amazing, regardless of the actual Star Wars theme. The technical implementation is spectacular and the combination of book and game, leaves Star Wars Journeys even after reading it, still interesting. We’re now really looking forward to the next Star Wars Journeys, as Disney has said on the App Store description, that they’re planning on releasing the other Star Wars parts as interactive storybook apps too. Of course as soon as this has happened, we’re going to let you know.
