Cosmetic Surgery: 6 Facts You Should Know About It

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic – or plastic – surgery has been growing in popularity over the last couple of decades. There are many different types of procedures available after a simple consultation with a professional surgeon. There are a few misconceptions and misunderstandings when it comes to plastic surgery, so here are 6 interesting facts that you should know, that may also help dispel some of the myths.

Cheapest Isn’t Best

Unlike other services, it’s not always best to look for cheap deals in this scenario. We spoke with Trenton Jones MD, a Utah-based cosmetic surgeon who told us that “The cost of your survey should and will vary depending on the complexity of your case and the experience of your surgeon.” This means the more experienced and well thought of your surgeon is, the more it may cost. Going cheap could mean going inexperienced which is not necessarily ideal.

Breast Augmentation Is No. 1

Having been one of the surgeries that popularized cosmetic surgery in the first place, breast augmentation remains the most popular cosmetic procedure to this day. Implants are used to fill the breast, giving a fuller look and feel. This can be done for someone with small breasts, someone who has had breast cancer removed, or someone in need of re-shaping breasts due to age or other medical factors.

Invasive and Non-Invasive

Some procedures are listed as invasive, some are non-invasive. The difference here is that an invasive procedure involves breaking the skin. This usually means cutting to create an incision for surgery. Non-invasive procedures do not involve a full break in the skin. For example, a hair transplant done by plucking hairs and inserting them on another part of the body is non-invasive, whereas a breast implant is invasive.

There Is No Plastic

The name plastic surgery comes from the Greek word plastikos. This means “to form or mold.” So there is not actually any plastic involved in “plastic” surgery. In fact, most implants are made of silicone, with a few other materials also used.

Anyone Can Get It

Plastic surgery is actually useful for people of all ages and sexes. It does not discriminate! Although most of the surgeries performed are on women – around 90%, men do choose to have plastic surgery. Surgeries are also often performed on people of all ages from 18-80, depending on their needs and specific medical requirements. It’s also worth remembering that some surgeries are life-saving or life-changing injuries, they aren’t all purely cosmetic. In fact, life-changing surgeries were where plastic surgery was developed.

There May Be Scars

Finally, it’s worth notice that plastic surgery is not a guaranteed scar-free experience. Even the greatest of surgeons can leave small scars where the skin is cut. Though, most plastic surgeons have spent years upon years practicing the art of a neat stitch to help reduce scarring as much as possible.

Will these six facts help sway you into getting plastic surgery? Only you know! Either way, there are some myths debunked and some facts you probably never knew. Now you can make your mind up a little easier as to whether plastic surgery is the one for you.
