8 Types Of Technologies Used By The Military

If a war ever breaks out between two countries, the country with the more advanced technology will most likely win. Although there’s nothing pleasant about wars, the technological innovations that are introduced by the military are quite impressive. That doesn’t mean that technological innovation is only limited to warfare, though; military establishments all over the world have always been the pioneers of creating and introducing new technologies, most of which aim to serve the general public. That said, let’s take a look at the different types of technologies used by military forces all around the world.

Drones

Drones have become widely available for commercial and individual use, but it’s one of the technologies first introduced by the military. In military terms, drones fall under the category of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Combat drones and other UAVs are used by the troops as surveillance tools to check enemy lines. They’re also remotely controlled to deploy weapons thousands of miles away from the troops’ frontlines, keeping the forces safe and limiting the number of warfare casualties. 

Military Servers

Servers are pieces of hardware or software used to provide functionality for computer devices or programs. Industrial servers are rugged computers often used in the manufacturing and production processes; in factories and heavy industries. Although a military server is also a rugged computer, it’s exclusively used by the Army, Air Forces, Navy, or other military branches. They need to operate on a much bigger, more efficient scale since they’re used in surveillance, weapon production, communication, and radar systems. Generally, they’re also much more secure than industrial servers. 

Submarines

The naval battlefield has always been as fierce as any other warfare, but the introduction of submarines was a game-changer. The very first successful submarine attack occurred during the American Civil War that lasted from 1861 to 1865, where enemy ships were attacked seemingly out of the blue – literally. Nowadays, the uses of military submarines extend beyond carrying and launching missiles to conducting reconnaissance, providing support to land attacks, and enforcing blockades. Newer technologies are experimenting with anti-detection tools to keep the submarines hidden from the enemies. 

Stealth Aircraft

Meanwhile, the military is also enforcing the stealth of their aircraft by implementing various technologies. Generally, planes are incapable of being completely invisible to radar detection, but that’s not the case with stealth aircraft. These aircraft can avoid detection by implementing an array of advanced technologies that reduce radio-frequency spectrum, infrared and radar emissions, and the aircraft’s reflection. As a result, enemies have a much harder time detecting or tracking these aircraft, which increases the odds of landing a successful attack. 

Space Weapons

Space weapons are as cool as they sound. They were first developed by both the U.S. and the former Soviet Union when the political tension had escalated during the Cold War. This technology controls warheads that are controlled in space to attack targets on Earth, destroy satellites or space systems, or intercept and/or disable missiles fired through space. 

Radar

Stealth technology mainly works to avoid being detected by the radar. The concept of radar is based on how radio waves are reflected from solid objects; as such, radar technology can measure the speed and distance at which a certain object is traveling. The technology was further developed to decipher the weather for days and even weeks ahead of time. 

Night vision 

The night vision technology was first developed by the German Army during World War 2. Later on, the technology was applied to the rangefinders and night-vision scopes swarming the battlefield. Although the applications of night vision are widespread in the military, it’s one of the technologies that became widely civilized. Nowadays, modern cars, surveillance systems, and cameras are equipped with night-vision as well. 

Plasma Protection Field

If the stealth aircraft wasn’t impressive enough, the plasma protection field technology is bound to blow your mind. This technology is capable of deflecting incoming blasts by creating fields of plasma. This field consists of ionized air that can deflect the blast, thus protecting the vehicle from blast damage. Although most of these systems can’t protect a vehicle from antitank missiles or rocket-propelled grenades, more advanced active-protection systems are capable of handling these kinds of blasts. 

When it comes to new technologies, military forces have always pioneered. The new technologies they introduce play a huge role in warfare, but that’s not the end of their contributions. Various military technologies are introduced to the public, allowing us to enjoy the luxuries and conveniences that come with adopting these advanced tools.
