Places You Need to Visit in the Balkans

Visit in the Balkans

There are various stunning places in the Balkans where you will be left in awe because of picturesque views. This is true regardless of whether you are after a nature trip or you want to get close and personal with history and culture. This article lists down some of the places you need to visit in the Balkans.

Mostar

When you are in the Balkans, make sure that you visit Mostar because this is where you will be able to wander in amazement at the Old Bridge. Mostar is the fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it was named after its bridge keepers. It is also one of the country’s major cultural attractions.

When you are in Mostar, you can also embark on bridge diving if you are after an extreme adrenaline rush. Otherwise, for a calmer tour, you can simply visit the Old Bridge Museum instead. The museum is one of the places that boost tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina because it is where you will find souvenir stalls set up around it. You will also get a good view of the bridge and riverbank from the top floor of the museum.

Split

Split is a city in Croatia, which is considered as the harmonious combination of natural and man-made beauty. For this reason, you have various sightseeing options, particularly when you stroll along the Riva on the waterfront. There is also the option for you to hike up one of the neighboring hills to get a view over the city. You can also opt to relax on the beach where you will get to watch the water lap onto the stony beaches.

Gjirokastra

When you come across Albania, make sure to pay Gjirokastra, or the ‘City of Stone’, a visit. It is listed as one of the UNESCO-protected sites in an attempt to preserve the Ottoman-style houses that you will most likely find all over the city. While it has been inhabited since the Bronze age, you may be surprised to find that most of the structures in the city are from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Peles Castle

There is also the option for you to go sightseeing in Romania and when you do, make sure to visit Peles Castle. This will take your mind off about Dracula’s heritage in Transylvania because of the delicately gorgeous castle emerging out of the forests. You will also be amazed to know that this castle is the first one to be fully fitted for electric power.

The places in the Balkans listed above are only some of the ones that you should never fail to visit when you are in the region. Some of the other ones that you should not miss include Lake Bled in Slovenia, as well as Subotica in Serbia. You can also choose to explore Visoki Dečani in Kosovo, as well as Lake Ohrid in Macedonia and Albania. Rest assured that when you are in the Balkans, you will not run out of interesting and amazing spots to explore through your journey.
